Our test van is fueling some financial concerns

Two months in to our time with the fast looking Ford, how is the Sport van doing on fuel?

We’ve had the Ford Transit Custom Sport on the Van Advisor fleet for nearly two months now, and I must say it’s been eight weeks of very enjoyable driving, albeit with a cautious eye on the fuel gauge.

Arriving with just 700 miles on the clock, the Sport still had a little bit more bedding in to do, so we could forgive the 28.5mpg average if soon started knocking out. Since then its largely spent these summer months trawling around London in first and second gears, something that was never going to see the fuel economy make any significant gains.

Initially we hovered around the low 29mpg mark, but just this week we’ve hit the magic 30mpg. This is still nothing to be proud of, but you’ll have to understand a 50 minute, ten mile journey is never going to see decent fuel economy. But, next week the Sport will get its first real test on a trip down to Devon, where it will tackle motorways, dual carriageways and some buttock clenchingly tight country roads. There’ll also be the odd hill climb – Lynmouth Hill is a particularly good one – and several steep descents.

It should be a real test for the van, and I’m not only looking forward to testing the Sport out away from the city, but also seeing that fuel needle stay away from the empty end of the gauge for a little while longer.
