Mercedes to reveal brand new pick-up truck

The launch of the highly anticipated Mercedes-Benz X-Class is nearly upon us.

We're in South Africa to see the reveal of the latest model in the Mercedes range, a work-ready but premium pick-up truck.

A live stream from the event will be broadcast below at 18:15 on Tuesday, so if you want to be first to see the new truck come back tomorrow evening. We're sure it will be quite a spectacle.

What can we expect from the event? Well, we're finally going to find out exactly what the new pick-up truck looks like. Previously Mercedes revealed two concept versions of the new 4x4 hinting at one ultra premium version and one tough off-roader. This time we'll see the model that will hit the showroom, and with it find out the specifications for the engines and trim levels.

Mercedes Benz X ClassMercedes has already confirmed the new X-Class will get a range-topping V6 in order to do battle with the new Volkswagen Amarok but we can expect a smaller engine taken from the Renault-Nissan stable. That's because the X-Class is based upon the Nissan Navara with an identical chassis. Expect the profile of the vehicle to have a familiar look, but for the front and rear to be radically different - although nothing like the show cars. Mercedes is also likely to ramp up the luxury feel of the new truck, so expect chrome and high quality looking materials on the inside, but with the same class-leading technology and safety equipment.

One thing that won't be identical to the Navara, or indeed the new Renault Alaskan which also shares the same platform, will be the price. Hopefully Mercedes will give an indication as to what the starting price will be for their brand new range of pick up trucks. Expect it to sit towards the top end of the Navara price bracket nearer the range-topping £27,500 (ex VAT) Navara Tekna, and some distance from the £21,500 starting price for an entry-level doubel-cab Nissan Navara Visia.

Come back after the event for full details of the new Mercedes X-Class pick-up.
