Van sales hit record high in 2016
Vans and pick-up truck sales have reached their highest ever level according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
A total of 375,687 new light commercials were registered in 2016, the fourth consecutive year of growth. Pick-up trucks were the biggest growth sector of the year, with 47,715 vehicles registered, and increase of 17.6%. The sector grew in every month of the year except for January, but it was December that saw the largest increase with a rise of 52.2%.
Heavy vans weighing 2.5 tonnes to 3.5 tonnes also grew in the year by 4.8% to 232,948 units.
Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “Another record year for light commercial vehicles is great news, even with marginal growth, and underlines the fundamental strength of the sector. To ensure future fleet investment and growth in this important market, buyers – and manufacturers – are looking for a strong economy and business environment.”
